BIBLE IN SCHOOLS.
A DOMINION REFERENDUM
The members of the Wellington Householders' League, who have been
interesting themselves in the question ot Bible in schools, are endeavouring to
secure a referendum on the subject, and with that object in view, we understand, have drafted a circular which is to be forwarded to the School Committees of
the dominion. A copy of this circular has been forwarded to us and we take from it the following, which appears after a notification that a special meeting should be called to discuss the question : — "The Wellington Householders 1
League is ot opinion . that the Bible' should be read in the State schools of
New Zealand. A general State referendum will remove the annual turmoil
over Bible reading at school committee elections. Even it you have Bible read-
ing in your school under the system
adopted in Nelson you are asked to vote. Western Australia, Tasmania, and New South Wales have the Bible in their schools. The activity ot the Bible in schools advocates throughout New Zealand at the recent school committee elections, and the success of the referendum on Bible reading in schools in Queensland,|prove that the people desire their children to receive some form ot Bible instruction in State schools. We
wish to point out that parents who ob
ject need not send their children to the Bible lessons ; it is not compulsory."
