A SPLENDID CHRISTMAS NUMBER.

NEW' ZEALAND ILLUSTRATED.

"New Zealand Illustrated," the Christmas number of that popular journal, "The Weekly Press," has arrived. From knowledge o. the publication in former years we looked for something redly good, but this time the proprietors have surpassed all previous efforts, and have produced an annual that is easily ahead of everything in the Southern Hemisphere. The variety of the pictures, which comprise nearly all the beauty spots of the colony, and the admirable manner in which they are roproduced —two-colour work this year being a special feature—add to the charm of the annual, which must be interesting to residents in every part of the colony, and form a most acceptable Christmas card for friends at Home. To enumerate the pictures, or even the subjects, for many of theae are in artistically decorated series, would fill far more space that can be allotted in. this paper. The coloured supplements have always been a feature of " New Zealand Illustrated," and the walls of many ajhome in New Zealand and the Old Country are brightened by them. This year the principal supplement is no whit behind its predecessors. It is a splendid reproduction in chrqmo lithography of W. Dittmer's celebrated painting "The Keeper of PaMkaure ". This forms a companion picture to that of Te Heu Heu, the supplement of last year, and wherever the one hangs the other will assuredly accompany it. As a contrast to this magnificent colour piece there is a simple supplement bearing the sigaifi cant title " Twelve Eights are — ," in which we gee a puzzled school boy attempting his arithmetic lesson, This is a special process printing in colour. The general get-up and printing of the paper is well up to the high standard set by the Ohristchurch. Press Company, and ranks with the very best the worldcan produce. " New Zealand Illustrated " shows us exactly what New Zealanders are, capable of, as it is colonial from cover to cover ; its literature by a New Zealandor; its engraving and workmanship entirely by the Press Company's staff.
