A LOAN FOR PAEROA.

The recommendation of (the County Engineer regarding the drainr age of Paeroa, in his report to the County Couueil on Thursday last, is'worfchy of consideration. The Engineer states in his report that it is " necessary for the maintenance of health and comfort to give facilities for carrying away the increasing6l house drainage." We agree with. him. The recent typhoid feyer epidemic, comparatively mild, as it was, is sufficient to show the niost careless that the drainage of the township is not all that it should bo. Tlje woj.'Jj mentioned by the Engineer as necessary is estimated to cost £1360, and while this may seem a TairLyJarge amount, still it will be money well spent if ifc will put the town in a better sanitary condition.'! Consideration of the matter has been deferred by the Qounci: until i a reply has been received'from Government as to whether a loan \ could he raised for Paeroa, on the security of propert}' in tho Paeroa township. We have no doubt the Government will lend the money, provided, of course, that the ratepayers approvp of ihe proposed loan. The rate necessary to be levied to pay interest on the loan will be so small, and the benefits accruing will be so great, that any ratepayer who has the welfare of the town at heart v-*ill certainly vote for the Joan being obtained. Paeroa is sadly in need of improved footpaths and improved drainage, and now that we have obtained our recreation grounds they will need money spent on them to make them of use to the peopi c.

The onty w,ay this money can be obtained is| by means of a loan. The County Council, of course, spends a pfertion of its revenue in Paeroa, burl with the many calls upon it for Jbther works, it is hard ly reasonable to expect the Council to spejßd a large sum ot money in Paeroa for an extensive drninage scheme, or for improving our recreation -grounds. Although a rate would need to 'be struck to meet interest on a loan, it would not, perhaps, be necessary to collect the rate. A fair amount of revenue would be derived from the recreation ground, and this, of course, will go towards paying the interest on the loan.
