The ordinary monthly meeting of the Oliinemuri County Council will be held on Thursday next.at 2 p.m., when a large amount of business will be transacted. Tenders are invited for no less than fifteen contracts, and applications for the position of slaughterman at the abattoirs will also be considered. The meeting on Thursday next will be the last one held by the present Council, as the elections take place on November Bth. Mr W. Vuglar, the genial and obliging proprietor of the Premier Butchery, Paeroa, has an advertisement in this issue, to which we would direct attention. Mr Vuglar has a well deserved reputation as a purveyor of meat of the best quality at most reasonable prices, and housewives and others cannot do bettor than patronise his establishment. The auction sale by Messrs McClelland and Gotz, held yesterday, was highly successful, and a number of cattle and sheep were disposed of at satisfactory prices. The firm's next sale will be held on Thursday, November 2nd. We have been favourod with a visit from Mr A. W. Schlesinger, the representative of the Goldfields Brewing Company, which has taken over tlie breweiy business at Paeroa lately carried on by Mr H. Wagstaff. The brewery is very capable hands, and with an energetic traveller of Mr Schlesinger's ability, the orders will doubtless come in pretty freely. We wish the new firm every success. Wo would remind those who intend competing at the Mackaytowii Sports. on November 9th that nominations close this evening at nine o'clock with with ibis secretary, Mr A. W. Ellis. Woods' Great Peppermint Cure tor Coughs and Colds never fails, is 6d and' 2s 6d, ' !
The Native Land Court has been busily engaged this week, and a large amount of business lia^ been transacted. The balance of Mrs Hfvwk'a furniture will be removed to Messrs Macksxy and Pratt's auction mart and sold there at 11 o'clock next Thursday. Tlio furniture, and effects arc all in goo:] order, and nro absolutely for sale. The list includes a new piano .and sewing machine, and both are in first class uvder. Mr J. A.. Shaiui (sprchil mining reporter of t!)0 N.Z. Herall), who is pvotty well known in Oliiiiemim, lias been despatched to the Transvaal as a special war correspondent, so that the Herald and Weekly News should be well represented at the seat of war. Mr Moultray, artist, has also been engaged for the same journal, the proprietors of which are truly enterprising. We regret to announce that Captain Poster, is at'present ill in the Thames Hospital, suffering from peritonitis. His position is considered critical, and hi? relatives were yesterday sent for. We are glad to see that at last something is being done to improve the condition of the footpaths in Paeroa. Sc ue of the' County workmen are at preiiont engaged in trimming the grass and .weeds from the paths and ditches, and the next work that should be attended to in this direction is the levelling of the footpaths. Amongst the visitors to Paeroa this week were the Hon. W. McCullagh, Mr McGowan, M.H.R., Mr Jackson Palmer, and Mr Mervyn Stewart. In another column Messrs Pinch Bros, return thanks for the j>atronage accorded them during the three years thoy have been in business in Paeroa. They also draw attention to the fact that they are now in a position to do trimming and painting in first-class style. Messrs Pinch Bros, are excellent tradesmen and turn out splendid work. A good opportunity is offered an energetic man at the Waitekauri Extended mine, as the cook house there is in need of a tenant. Between thirty and forty men are employed at the mine, and the rent of the cook house is only 10s per week. Applications are tobe made personally or by letter to-the manager of the Waitekauri Extended mine. The usual auction sale held weekly at Mackay and Pratt's mart, Paeroa, will take place on Thursday next, when, in addition to several lines of property, furniture, produce, etc., the firm is to sell by auction that v ellknown freehold property-' of Mrs J. Hawk, situated in Corbett street. The house is well built, comprising eight rooms, and there is also an excellent garden. . • That the peop)e of -Wellington turned out en masse to bid good bye to our boys who are on the way to the Transvaal, is now ;history. ; Not lo' very long ago we had to draw on our imagination as to what took place, but owing to the great strides made in the art of reproducing photos we can now get splendid pictures of any public scene. The proprietors 9I the Auckland Weekly News are, . especially fortunate in being able to faithfully and clearly reproduce, and this week they have turned out a really excellent number,' giving some striking views of the memorable scene in Wellington last week. 1 ;•-■'■ . ■ '. J The annual "meeting, of the Ohinemuri Jockey Club was held in the Criterion Theatre on Tuesday evening, when a large number of members were present. There were eight nominations for the three vacancies on the. list of stewards, and Messrs. Power, Cassidy and Priston weie elected. At a {subsequent meeting of tlio stewards, Mr W. H. Phillips was elected chairman. Pred Mills says he once assisted in a retreat. We are pleased to see Mr and Mrs Barry, of Waihi, back again in the district, lookiug in splendid health after their trip to Englaud.
