ASSAULT AND ROBBERY.
SENSATIONAL OASEi A rather sensational case of assault and robbery occurred at Paeroa late on Wednesday night. It appears that a man named J. A. Persson had been knocking 1 ribout during the evening with Arthur McKell, of Karangahake. Late in ; the night, he ejaculated to McKell, " Good God, I've been robbed of £24. McKell replied, '' Have you ? I know who's taken your money, it's that billiard marker at the old Criterion." Accordingly they repaired down the street again, and- meeting the man in question—a quiet, respectable man named Allen J. McCarthy— McKell went over to him, and, coming baok to Persson, said, " He's got it all right, you go for him. Persson did <s.go" for.hiru, and, assisted by McKeli, relieved him of £4 odd and a watch, besides giving him a terrible pummel- ! ling. McCarthy, as soon as be re- i covered, went and told Sergeant Brennan the circumstances, and the Sergeant promptly came down town and arrested Persson. It was. then after midnight. McKell, however, could not be found. On Thursday morning', Constable Connor, hearing McKell was in Power's Hotel, went to arrest him. McKell then placed a roll of notes in Miss Power's hand and asked her to look after them. He was then arreted and: taken to the lock-up. The police were meantime advised of the roll of money loft with Miss Power, and on obtaining possession. of it found it contained £24, the" ex^ct amount Persson lost. DEFOKE -THE COUIIT. At the Police Court on Thursday, before E.S. Bush, Esq., S.M., J. A. Pcrsson and A, McTTell were charged with assaulting and robbing A.' J. McCarthy. Mr O'Meagher appeared I'ov McKell, and Sergeant Brennan appeared for tho police and asked for a remand, as he intended to i,educe the charge to one of common assault. The accused were accordingly remanded lill tho 17th inst., bail being allowed each, in their own recognizances, of £20.
Arthur McKell was then charged with stealing- £24 from the person of one. A. J. Persson. Mr O'Moagher appeared for ' accused. Sergeant Brennan again asked for a remand, but said lie would require heavy bail. Accused .was accordingly remanded to the 17th inst., bail being allowed- self in £50 and two sureties of £25 :mch.
