ODDS AND ENDS.

Of all the people Avho died in London during the last year, no fewer than 3236 had passed their 80th year. Out of 103 persons over 80 who died in London in one week, 40 died of old age. The very old, by remaining indoors, suffered less from fog and frost than many young neople. Only 9 per cent of cases of amputation are fatal. Birmingham turns out five tons of hairpins every week. One quarter of all the people born die before six years and one half before they are 16. Tn nearly every street in Japanese cities is a public oven where for a small fee housewives may have their dinners and suppers cooked for them.

One room in the Tenderlion Club of New York is papered with 6000 playing cards, while another is covered with theatre tickets and contains a cornice of champagne corks right round it. In Japan men sell caged locusts singing crickets and other noisy insects in the streets of cities. No women are allowed to live on board present clay war-ships. Yet in the oklen days sometimes a quarter of those on board were women. Melson,-however, set his face against the custom and refused to have any women on board his ship. This led to several getting smuggled on board disguised as men.
