THE KINEMATOGRAPH.
Lovers of the marvellous are promised a scientific treat at tlie Criterion Theatre on Monday and Tuesday . evenings, the 13th and 14th insts. Mr A. H. "Whitehouse exhibits the electrical kinematograph or projecting kinetoscope, he having in May last bad'a personal interview with the inventor, Thos. A. Edison, and has procured the most perfect apparatus obtainable, including a portable engine and dynamo, so that the scenes are. brilliantly illuminated by tbo electric light. This is the only one of its kind in New Zealand, and the realistic pictures are guaranteed larger, clearer and steadier than those of any previous machine. Eeporting on it during a six nights'season at the Opera House, Auckland, the Star says:—''The Pictures were shown by means of an electric light, which was a great improvement, and showed the views with wonderful distinctn«ss." The scenes, of which there are a large variety, are excep- " tion lly good, as in the burning stable the animals, which are evidently frightened, are rescued amid dense volumes of smoke in so realistic a manner that one would feel like cheering the rescuers. Another splendid effect is the whirlpool rapids, the exact spot where Captain "Webb lost his life, and the foaming waters are seen rushing and surging in mad tumult. The great inventor is portrayed at his laboratory, moving and wor. ing among his bottles and instruments in a singularly life-like manner, j The great Jubilee success, Henly eight oared boat race, and many others,, humourous, tragic and pathetic. A splendid, corollary is the loud duplex phonograph, which is a marvel of volume and distinctness. The Herald says : "Beautiful as the kinematograph representations were, the phonographic songs and representations were scarcely less popular; the xylophone solo was a perfect gem, and several pretty and popular songs, including "Ben Bolt," had a weirdly beautiful effect." Altogether the entertainment promises to be worthy of the fullest patronage.
