WAIHI.
[FROM OTTE OWtf CORRESPONDENT."] • It'is .great valu9 to notice a Maori prediction that has lately gone the. round of the papers, viz., thai; we are to have a very dry and early summer because a few-karaka trees-have come out in bloom a little-earlier than usual. If those prophetic natives lived around these diggings ►! think 'they would alter their • tune completely, as up to the present there are no signs of summer weather <at all. 'On Tuesday there was about the heaviest downfall here that has been experienced for some weeks past, and our roads are now in a worse state than they were in the middle of winter. What should be the centre of our street presents | the .appearance 'of a canal, and on .Tuesday 1 there was a tidy-sized creek; [racing along. ■ My word, won't -we be! glad when that £6000" loan is put into circulation, as there may be .some chance of having something done to improve locomotion in our township. Mr Xellywas on the job with his Phonograph at the Public. Hall, on Monday night, and had a very small but thoroughly appreciative audience. The show deserved a much, larger attendance as it is a most wonderful affair. The programme gone through was -varied and amusing., Songs; cornet solos, band music from Amerioa; and a Salvation Army tuue which was immense . and fetched the audience' greatly. Mr Slevin did a pennywhistle solo into the machine, andimmediately after it.was-churned out again in -fine style. ' Mr Oasely sung -a. song, Gua.Harfcman a cornet solo, and Mr Shea, a message into the machine, besides others, the whole of which' were faithfully repeated, ■ .', > Our township is on the -movo as-one - building was brought down from the; battery on to the soction adjoining .the Hall fast Sunday. On Monday Mr Brown's shop was.removed from the hotel ground up to A. Clark's section-' "It was" so wet on Wednesday night'; that the select dance in the schoolroom ; had to' be postponed, and eventuates on Friday night. . "■> The dancing class had a very pleasant' gathering at the hall last night, nearly . 30 couples being present; dancing was kept up with great spirit -until 10.30 p.m. j 'Mr and Mrs Tanner, of Tauranga,, then ew proprietors of the Waihi Hotel, , are here at present, but do not t&ke over, tho concern I'before to-morrow. -If they • make themselves as,popular asMr.-H. Gordon has been there is no doubt ;i they, . will make money out of their bargain. Waihi, Thursday.
