LOCAL SUBSIDIES.
A leader in the."Herald" says:-—^ " One of the proposals of the Financial;Statement was that the subsidies paid : to County Councils and Borough GouniCils.next yearshould be reduced by one-: half, and that in' the' year, bat vone following they should be abolished •altogether. We drew attention to the subject, and a number of local bodies have ~ communicated 'with the Government,, ; with'the result that, as appears from- a; telegram from the Hon Mr Gadman to the chairman of the Ohinemuri County, l the proposal has been^abandonedj and the local bodies will receive the subsidiesas usual. There is :nb doubt ,that the money is well spent by the smaller boroughs and-the County r Councils, and that settlement in the country, will%e;: seriously retarded if the subsidies were to be. * withdrawn.' But' there: as/ an argent need of reform in the ■■ systena,: which should be altered in the direction i ■of giving districts in which 1 the settlers are few and scattered a much larger . proportion of the funds available tham old and closely settled parts which have all their roads made." r ■■ :,
