A TERRIBLE EARTHQUAKE.
The steamer Battenburn, which, arrived at Sydney, on Monday, from China, bring news of a terrible earthquake which is supposed to have occurred at Sangmer, an island in the Celebes Sea.
A Dutch mail steamer left Sangmer for Timor, in the Malay Archipelago, and the captain reported that shortly . after leaving a terrible explosion occurred. The sky was darkened with ashes and smoke, and the vessel was covered with ashes. When the atmosphere cleared there was no trace of the-island visible. . The population is estimated at twelve ■ thousand. Several sailing vessels were at Sangmer at the time, and it is almost certain that they were destroyed. The,shock was felt at Timor. ' The Battenbuvn, while steaming through the Celebes Sea, passed for miles through debris and wreckage of all kinds.
