eaidtliSt M^Marrinanjbeing discharge at the .'instance .of,any one member of th Trustees, f was untrue, as he had been discharged by, the Resident Surgeon as being , incurable. Marrinan had "been abont "seven months in the Hospital, and as he, .was able to get abont to all appearances, as if nothing was wrong <with .him, the, House Committee had asked, for a report on his case, and Dr Williams reported that Marrinan had heart ;disease and that he was not likely to benefit by hospital treatment; that he would have discharged him months previously if he had had a homb on the Thames, but he had strained a point in liis favour as he came from the country ; and that Marrinan only required board' and lodging and an occasional bottle of •medicine, which latter,he could procure as an-out-patienk ,Dr .Williams asked for directions; the House Committee decided .not, to ( interfere with the •surgeon's ./authority,,,but that they would.expect him to,do his duties in accordance with the bye-laws, which he had to take for his guidance. Dr Williams then discharged Marrinan. In regard to Dr Williams or any of the staff carrying out the instructions- of any individual member of the Trustees, the thing was absnrd, as the Trustees were only recognised as Trustees when -in meeting assembled, and any instructions, they gave when sitting'regarding the staff or any other business in connection with the Hospital was fixed by bye-law, to be carried out by "the Secretary, and he felt sure that the Trustees would resent any of their members interfering in any way with the discipline of the Hospital. The Board' passed a resolution that "they were quite satisfied with the Secretary's statement, and that no enquiry •on the part of the Board was necessary. In Teference to this matter we are -authorised to state that Mr Bruce's statement is incorrect as it appears above, and that Mr Marrinan will ■ shortly go into details to prove. his -allegations.
