THE COMING BUDGET.
The "HeraldV Wellington corres- , pondent says :- i-I have already informed you that rumours are afloat that the coming budget will be largely protectionist. It is stated that among the new duties which the Government intend to impose will be one of 5s a ton on Newcastle coal, in retaliation for tha Uew Suiith Wales duty on New Zealand grain.' Rumour, also has it that while the duties on tea and sugar will be abolished those on more expensive kinds of liquors and other "luxuries" will be increased. Ten per cent, increase is also spoken of in connection with the duties on iron, leather, cement, etc. Other extensive re-arrangements of the Customs tariff are also hinted at. It is not expected that any increase will be ' proposed in the land tax as Ministers .resent the imputation that they are capital 1 out of the colony, and do not wish to give fresh ground for it. Indeed it is regarded as cettain that .there will be some relief as to obnoxious - tax on debentures. I give all these for wnat they are worth.
