MINING NOTES.
The Hon Mr Oadman paid a visit to the Crown Mine on Saturday, with Messrs McvJonneU and Edwards. Mr Cadman was surprised at the quality of stone now to grass, both from the Crown Extended and the Monastery Section, some of which was thick with gold, and, moreover, qhe right sort of stone in general appearance. The hon. gentleman says that with its supply of fair grade ere, its cheap motive power and immense backs, Karangahake should be second to: no field on the peninsula. - The average value of the ore treated from the commencement of the new regime is £15 per ton. The last return was about £1500 for the month, being from 104 tons. In the .Woodstock the mill is started on a parcel of free milling ore, and good general work is reported by Mr McCombie.
From *Waihi we hear that the month? s return- of bullion, which was -sent to town by the s.s. Paeroa on Wednesday, far exceeds both in quality' -and -quantity any return yet received. Mr E. K. Cooper has assumed the the sole control of the Jubilee, Waite-! Isauru All-the navvy work of- the| 'tramway is finished, and the rails are now being laid., Mr Cooper has -a goodly quantity of. good-value rock grassed. r - The returns for the exported •ore have not yet been received. In" the course of an article on Scientific Mining the "New Zealand Insurance Mining, and Finance Journal" ((Dunedin) remarks tbati "The Waihi tmine, in the provincial district of Auckland, is a remarkable instance at, the time of the difference that is in gold mining by the application io tfee industry of skill and ability, together with considerable capital. • The Waihi was "busted" until English •capital and skill were applied to it. The JBlne Spar Amalgamated was on the >down grade, and has been resuscitated -only by the skill of the present manager. We venture to say that there are scores •■of hundreds of acres- of gold bearing ground; io New Zealand which have been given np or still remain untouched, ihufc which would give a rich return if 'proper appliances and Bkill were at 'hand to develop them. The position is Just ,this: that Government might- be -asked to-step in and assist in creating -complete ■chlorination works, so as to save the many thousand pounds thrown in the pyrites. As we have said sagain and again, the grestest difficulty which stands in the way of the gold 'mining industry i 9 the ignorance of ;gold mining and their positive distaste '■of scientific mining." When speaking in regard to the ■gold duty, on his late visit to the "Thames Mr Cad man remarked that in the South those districts which had so loudly for-the abolition of iihe gold t duty had now admitted their mistake, and would be gilad to get it %aok again. Two of the members from Tthese districts had told him that they -wanted it back. - - Daring a conversation with the Hon. iA. J. 'Cadman the reporter "drew the hon. gentleman's attention to .general depression now existing in 'themining industry at the Thames, and wasted him if he thought there was any (possibility of 'Government assisting by aid in developing our mineral resources. Mr /Cad man pointed out that this was unquestionally a matter for the Cabinet to discuss, but he thought u that if a good scheme was unanimously ■adopted byrthe, Thames community as >the most practicable for developing the tfield,, the .Government would consider the matter and the necessary aid be .granted.
