County Council Deputation,

j On Monday -morning last a deputation; consisting 'of Crs Ed wards; Robson, Phillips, and Nash waited upon the Native' Minister, rat" the Couaty offices, and; .laid.before, him severalimportant matters.

, Tbe first question asked was whether the £200 promised by 'the; Hon. Mr McKenzie,' on his lafe visit, could be applied to liquidating liabilities shortly due for Earl's Hill deviation and other necessary works on the main road, together with the proposed outlay for the deviation at Turner's Hill and work on the Paeroa-Waitoa road. The County Chairman stated that, th« Hon. Mr McKenzie had offered this money instead of a remission of a similar sum owieg by the County to Government, but dt was i'ot quite clear as to whether the money was to be spent on actual new works or not. If the.former, the assistance would not be of much relief. Mr Cadman stated that he would, he believed, have little difficulty in arranging this with Mr MuKenzie.

In regard to a question asked as to whether Government would allow this Oountj', autonomy in Charitable Aid matters, the hon. gentleman thought it could not at present be arranged. It was stated that although a large sum of money is yearly paid by tha County, i wot one person" receives charitable aid in < >the district.

The vexed question of the illegal cutting of kanri timber was brought up by the Chairman, and was the subject; of a long conversation. 'fMfc Cadman' agreed that the Countie.3 shouM receive all revenues accruing' from the sale of kauri and snggesieil that Ghinemuri should co-operate with the Thames and Ooromandel people and ask Government to do those things necessary to this end.

The matter of the rating of Native lands was then brought up, and Mr Cadman fully agraed that it was a,great injustice that Native land should go scathless. He had the matter in view

and hoped gradually to bring the desideratum about

The conservation of the river, the getting of a subsidy of £2 for £1 towards making the road to Waitoa and other matters were touched upon, being satisfactorily answered by the Minister. The Chairman asked that a Government surveyor be instructed to lay off a road, on the other side of the Waihou, to connect with the Waitoa and Morrinsville systems find Mr Cad man'promised to assist in this, recommending the Council to apply to the Survey Depart^ ■ment ad interim.

The deputation cordially thanked the Hon. Minister and withdrew.
