WOOL DILEMMA
Sir,—Your report of the executive meeting of the O.F.F. shows that in Otago at least farmers have been given a spirited lead. They have seen the writing on the wall as far as taking of.farmers’ money by Governments is concerned, and it is up to every farmer to give their leaders full support until our money is only taken by direct taxation, which is the legal way. It is of vital importance to the farmer ofmoderate means—at least 75 per cent, are that —to see that the cream of his 60-hour week labour does not flow into other people's pockets all the time. He may consider he has not the means nor the time to support his branch, but to bring about a change would be well worth the effort.
If the Government had been genuine in its attempt to prevent inflation, why not ask the selling agents to freeze their commission on the £SO millions to be frozen; £75,000, a small amount, but not needed any more thain the farmers’ money. What about the levy to support J. O. buying, 71 per cent, at first, this season 1 per cent, or £750,000. It will be “a long time no see ” or “no see at all ” with this sum. ’ Your correspondent "A” does not seem to realise how far this idea may go if it is allowed to, specially if the Opposition recovers power. He would do well to remember that sheepfarmers did not ask for fantastic prices, nor is very much of it New Zealand money.—l am, etc., C. R. Harrex.
