Italian Steamer Breaks Her Back NZPA—Copyright Rec. 8.45 p.m. LONDON, Dec. 24. The Italian steamer, Santa Gata, ran aground on Goodwin Sands in the English Channel early today and broke her back. Coastguards at Deal saw the ship approaching the sandbank and tried to warn her by morse lamp signals, but they got no reply. The Italian steamer later sent out. an SOS reporting that she was aground . and that the captain had decided to abandon her. < The Santa Gata (7049 tons) was on her way from Casablanca tq Britain when she struck the sands about 10 miles offshore. James Rich, 60-year-old bowman of the Walmer lifeboat, collapsed and died at his post during the rescue of the crew.
