OBITUARY

Mr Frank Anderson

The death occurred yesterday of Mr Frank Anderson, who was well known and highly esteemed in business and sporting circles in Dunedin. Mr Anderson, who was 59 years of age, was in partnership with his brothers in a butchery business in South Dunedin for many years, and he was also prominently associated with the activities of the Dunedin Master Butchers’ Association.

Mr Anderson was keenly interested in all branches of sport, and as a young man was a member of the Dunedin Amateur Boating Club and rowed with .considerable success in club and regatta fixtures. He was one of the early members of the harrier movement in Dunedin and was club captain of the now defunct St. Andrew’s Harriers, who used to hold their runs on Wednesday afternoons. Interested in wrestling from his youth, Mr Anderson enjoyed success in the sport competitively, and in later years, when the Otago Wrestling Association came into being, he was a member of the executive almost from ,its inception more than 20 years ago, and at the time of his death was president of the association. He was also president of the Dominion Wrestling Union for a term, and with him the fostering and encouragement of amateur wrestling was a prime consideration. He conducted an amateur wrestling school in conjunction with his brother for many years and was recognised as one of New Zealand’s leading instructors. He was the Otago Association’s referee for a long period, and overseas professionals often commented upon his outstanding capabilities. Mr Anderson was a director of the Caledonian Society of Otago, and recently held office as president. He was a steward of the Forbury Park Trotting Club, and, in partnership with Mr G. J. Barton, had considerable success with the pacers Luck Ahead and Bull’s-eye. Mr Anderson is survived by his wife and one daughter, Mrs R. W. Kindley, of Dunedin.
