HEAVY BOOKINGS
Transport Services
Transport services to and from Dunedin will be heavily booked from now until the beginning of February. Railway officials, however, are confident that they will be able to cope with the holiday crowds travelling by train, even though in some instances bookings are slightly heavier than last year. Today and tomorrow will be particularly strenuous for the railways staffs, as many relief expresses are being run in addition to the normal services.
Many people had made their bookings up to two months ahead, one official told the Daily Times, but lastminute arrangements had caused many of them to change their plans, thus causing the railways staff extra work. When the schools resumed again he thought that the most hectic time of the year would then have passed. The National Airways Corporation is also running extra services for the benefit of holiday travellers, and yesterday six services operated from Taieri for the north, while the same number is due to be employed today. “A phenomenal amount of freight is being consigned at the present time,” one official said, “and many lucky people will receive geese, ducks and fowls by way of the air.” The air services are also likely to carry a greatly-increased number of passengers during the next few weeks. ’f Bus services will be no exception to the rule and they, too, will ckrry greatly-increased loads.
