Theft Of Large Sum Alleged
A youth, aged 17, suppression of whose name was ordered, appeared before Mr J. G. Warrington, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge of stealing £1243 10s from his-father. For the police, Chief Detective Hall, said that the alleged offence had been committed in the early hours of the morning and the accused was arrested just before the court sat. gome of the money had been recovered in a motor truck belonging to the accused’s father and another portion, had been found in the accused’s possession where he was living in town The accused was remanded until Thursday, December 14. bail being granted in his own recognisance of £2OO and one surety of £2OO. on condition that he report daily to the police. " She was very unsteady on her feet and there was a strong smell of alcohol on her breath." These were the words used by Constable I. A'. Barber to describe the condition of a married woman, aged 44, whom he arrested in King street early yesterday morning on a charge of drunkeness. The defendant' a first offender, pleaded not guilty and was convicted and discharged. Constable Barber said that be was summoned to a disturbance in King street shortly before 2 a.m. that day. There was a “ fair row ” going on at the deresidence. “ The defendant came out into the street and demanded that I lock her up to make her husband ashamed of her," he said. " She was very abusive ’’ Mr Warrington: What did she say?
Constable Barber: She was swearing. Constable Barber said that she went to the Police Station in the police car quite readily. The defendant said that the last thing she remembered was falling through a window. The next thing she recalled was getting out of the police car and going into the Police Station, where she asked for her doctor. The defendant said that she was probably about 20 minutes to half an hour at the Police Station before the doctor arrived. Dr G. J. Jenner said he was called to the Police Station about 3 a.m. He said that the defendant admitted having consumed about six gins and four beers. She had the appearance of having consumed quite a quantity of alcohol. She did most of the tests quite well, however. The defendant had been under his care for some time with various nervous disorders. He considered that she had been drinking quite heavily and had been intoxicated, but she was beginning to sober up when he saw her
