PREVENTION OF MUMPS
New Vaccine Announced WASHINGTON.' Commercial preparations of a vaccine said to prevent the mumps is announced here by a drug-making firm. The new vaccine is primarily recommended for immunisation of large groups of children or adults housed together in schools, camps, institutions or military establishments. It is not recommended yet for routine use in the prevention of mumps in childhood since it gives immunity for only about a year its makers say. It may be recommended for adult patients who never had the disease but are threatened with exposure to it, virologists said. Mumps in childhood is generally not' considered a serious disease, but in male adults it may attack the sex glands and lead to sterility. The new vaccine, it was stressed, is ineffective if administered after exposure to mumps.—Reuter.
