INCREASE INADEQUATE
Railway Wages VIEW OF OTAGO BRANCH “ Taking the economic position into consideration we fail to see how Is 8a a week for juniors and 3s 4d for basic wage earners is considered adequate to meet the present upward trend in the cost of living,” said Mr C. H. Taylor, chairman, of the Otago branch of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants of New Zealand, and Mr J. A. Bradshaw, secretary, in a statement to the Daily Times yesterday on the increases in, pay granted to railway employees.“The general feeling of members of the branch appears to 'be complete dissatisfaction with the miserable pittance granted by the Railways Tribunal,” they stated. “It appears that the»Government is attempting to reduce the deficit of the Railways Working Account at tne expense of the working staff, the statement continued. “It appears that the Government has not taken into consideration the arduous conditions under which the staff endeavours to maintain an efficient service.” A general meeting of the Otago branch is to be held on Sunday afternoon when the tribunal s findings will be officially discussed.
