Chinese Communists Announce Terms For Withdrawal From Korea
NEW YORK, Nov. 17.
A Chinese Communist four-point proposal for settling China’s part in the Korean war was outlined at Lake Success today by a source close to the Soviet delegation. The terms on which the Peking Government would be prepared to pull out of Korea were said to be:
1. The creation of a 40-mile deep “ buffer ” zone south of the KoreanManchurian border to be administered by the present North Korean authorities.
2. The withdrawal of the United States Seventh fleet from Formosan waters.
3. The withdrawal of United States recognition of Chiang Kai-shek’s Government on Formosa.
4. A concrete declaration by the United States that it would give no further assistance to the Chiang Government.
It was impossible to check whether the “ terms ” were those of the Peking Government itself, or those which the Soviet Union would like to see Peking adopt as a basis for negotiation.
