SUBSIDY ON WOOL
Action By Australian Government NZPA—Copyright CANBERRA, Nov. 18. . For every pound of greasy wool used by manufacturers in Australia the Commonwealth will pay an average subsidy of 45d as one means of countering the high wool price effect on the Australian public. This was announced by the Minister of Commerce and Agriculture, Mr John McEwan, who said the payments would be retrospective to August 28. The subsidy will be payable on Australian production of wool tops, woollen yarn and felts. Noils and waste will also have a subsidy. The prices to the public of manufactured articles will be. regulated by the State price authorities. Legislation to be introduced soon will provide for a check on the export of goods made with subsidised wool. Wool Gleaners
Spurred on by the high wool prices, youths in country districts of New South Wal,es are earning up to' £2O a week from the salvage of scrap wool. They scour sheep yards, saleyards, stock routes and empty trucks and also get a yield from trees, posts and stumps rubbed against by sheep.
