DUNEDIN CITY COUNCIL
Labour Secures Six Seats
By the loss of six seats to Labour, the Citizens’ Association has now only equal representation, with six city councillors, in Dunedin. The balance of power in most cases will rest with the Mayor-elect, Cr Wright, who is a Citizens’ Association candidate.
Four Labour members headed the polling, followed by three men on the opposing " ticket," and then the first woman councillor to be elected to the council, Mrs E. E. McMillan.
The unsuccessful Mayoral candidate, Mr Hubert Brown, was fourth on the list of city councillors elected.
Cr E. J. Anderson, who topped the poll for the council in 1947, was last of the'successful candidates according to the preliminary results, but there is a distinct possibility that some of the positions of candidates shown by Saturday’s count may be changed when the official figures are compiled this week and about 1000 postal votes are included. On present indications, two sitting councillors have lost their seats. The polling resulted:— McMillan, David Gervan (L.) .. 12,273 Connelly, Michael (L.) 12,158 Jones, Frederick, M.P.
