MAYORAL MARGINS

Past Six Elections

Although the margin between the two mayoral candidates in Dunedin was substantially smaller than in 1947, when Sir Donald Cameron scored a heavy victory by 12,070 votes over Mr F. Jones, jun., there was a closer result in 1944, when there were only 704 votes between Dr D. G. McMillan and Sir Donald (then Mr) Cameron, when the retiring Mayor was first elected to office.

< In 1941, when there were three mayoral candidates —Messrs A. H. Allen, Dr D. G. McMillan and Mrs O. S. Jones-Neilson —Mr Allen was elected by 3000 votes from his nearest opponent Dr McMillan. In 1938, the margin between Mr Allen (elected), and Mr E. T. Cox was 4038.
