EIGHTY-FIVE YEARS AGO
FROM THE FILES OF THE ©tago ©ail'? Whites DUNEDIN, NOVEMBER 20, 1865. Our commercial reporter states that the condition of things on the goldfields is satisfactory, and the increasing population, together with the extended use of superior appliances, is perceptible in the amount of the official returns. The market for fat stock has been only moderately supplied with either cattle or sheep recently, and prices obtained show a decided advance on last month’s quotations. Fat cattle have been selling at £l4 5s to £24, equal to about 50s per 1001 b; fat sheep (in the wool), at 20s to 275, equal to about 51d per lb; and shorn, at 15s to 17s, equal to about '4Jd per lb.
