IMPRESSIVE BATTING

CRICKET

Century To S. N. McGregor

Features of the third round of matches in the Otago Cricket Association’s competition which were commenced on Saturday in fine weather were, impressive batting displays by several well-known Otago Plunket Shield players. The only century of the day was the 106 scored by the Grange colt, S. N. McGregor, but the New Zealand representative, B. Sutcliffe played a most attractive innings of 94, not out, for Kaikorai against High School Old Boys. G. Crowley (University) 76, G. H. Mills (Old Boys) 69, D. S. St. John (Old Boys) 51, also passed the half-century and several'other batsmen recorded good totals.

The wickets were dry and hard, and fortunes fluctuated in most of the games. Grange after an indifferent start recovered to score 245 against Albion-YMCA, which lost two wickets for 56 runs, leaving the game at an interesting stage. With 138 for no wickets in reply to Old Boys score of 193, Kaikorai ended the day in a good position, and Carisbrook also finished in a strong position by dismissing seven Dunedin batsmen for 129 after scoring 248 itself. These matches were all played at Logan Park. University, playing North-East Valley at the Gardens, scored 232 and then took six Valley wickets for 150 runs. M. Lamont, the Kaikorai mediumpaced trundler, secured the best bowling figures of the day with seven for 69, and E. Watson (Albion-YMCA) accomplished another useful performance with five for 63.

The position of the teams are:— Grange, 245; Albion-YMCA, 56 for two wickets.

University, 282; North-East Valley, 150 for six wickets.

Carisbrook, 248; Dunedin, 129 for seven wickets. Old Boys, 193; Kaikorai, 138 for no wickets.
