McMILLAN CUP

TENNIS

Pine Hill Players Win Tournament Tlie annual McMillan Cup tournament was held at the Logan Park courts on Saturday. The entry was good and although a gusty wind made conditions trying the standard of play was reasonably high. The handicapping on the whole was well done and with the exception of a few instances where previous performances of players were not available the results were comparatively close. The cup was won by E. Gray and Miss A. Rogers of Pine Hill, the former a veteran'and the latter a very promising junior. They defeated a young visiting Aucklander, G. Hill, and Miss I. Stuart, of Kaituna, the winners of the senior section after a long and exciting match in which Hill and Miss Stuart appeared to have a good chance until the Auckland player tired and fell into errors. Miss Stuart played well, driving from both wings with plenty of pace and keeping a good length. Miss Robers exhibited a fine match temperament. Her ground strokes are very promising and she produced a series of deep lobs which forced her opponents into errors at the critical stage of the final. Grey played a shrewdly balanced game, making the best use of his handicap, and compelled the opposition to fight for every point. This is the first occasion for several years that the cup has been won by a pair from the lower grade. Although defeated in the senior final D. Radford, the Otago champion, was in fine form all day, his volleying being a feature. Results:— Senior Grade Court Winners.—D. Duff and Miss M. Crombie (owe 8), G. Hill and Miss I. Stuart (owe 3), R.
