RAILWAY WAGONS

Not Economically Used

PA WELLINGTON, Oct. 20. The Minister of Railways, Mr Goosman, discussing the vote for Railways Working Account in the House of Representatives today, said that railway wagons were not being used as economically as they should be. There should be more co-operation from users to ensure that wagons were returned to service as promptly as possible, he said. Unfortunately, 2200 wagons were under repair at present. About 1200 new wagons should reach New Zealand this year of the 3800 on order.

Mr Goosman told the House that 35 railcars ordered in 1949 would not reach New Zealand until 1952. The vote was carried and the House rose at 5.45 p.m. until 2.30 p.m. on Tuesday.
