BRAVERY REWARDED
Message Of Appreciation
Received
“ But for your courage and skill, I would be six years dead and lying with a lot of my friends below Cassino. I am delighted that you have received this recognition.” This message has been received from Majorgeneral Sir Howard Kippenberger by Mr W. Green, of Gore, on the news of his investiture in Dunedin with the British Empire ■ Medal. '• Mr Green was responsible for an act of gallantry which saved the life of Sir Howard, then commander of the 2nd New Zealand Division in Italy, when his feet were blown off by a mine on Mount Trocchio, overlooking Cassino, in March, 1944.
The citation stated: “ William Green was a private in the 23rd New Zealand Infantry Battalion. On March 2, 1944, without any thought of his own personal safety, he passed over an enemy minefield to attend the division commander, who had been seriously wounded by an anti-personnel mine on Mount Trocchio. His prompt action and skilful dressing of the wounds undoubtedly saved the life of the general. This is only one of several of Private Green’s acts of bravery and devotion to duty. He was undoubtedly one of the most fearless and most efficient stretcher-bearers in the brigade.”
