Rolls Closed The supplementary roll for the various elections to be held on Saturday, November 18—mayoralty, City Council, Hospital Board, Harbour Board and Catchment Board"—closed at 5 p.m. yesterday. The returning officer, Mr H. E. Lyon, told the Daily Times that the only persons who could claim votes now were ratepayers who had . been inadvertently left off the rolls. The purging of the rolls will be started on Tuesday, and this work is likely to take five nights. f , Flying Record Records in flying distance were set in June, when American Airlines exceeded 6,000,000 passenger miles in a single day. The day on which the record was set was June 14, when the company reported 6,615,000 passenger miles. Two days later the company approached its own record with 6.489,000 passenger miles. Weather In September ' Last month 148.6 hours of sunshine were recorded in Dunedin, compared \with ,189.5 , hours in Alexandra and , 125.4 hours in Oamaru. The highest rainfall was recorded at Balclutha, rain falling on 12 days, with a total of 0.92in. v Ram was recorded on 12 days ' in Dunedin, where the total fall was 0.63 in, while the fall at , Alexandra was 0.52 in. and at Oamaru 0.46 in. Freak Polyanthus A polyanthus with at least 80 blooms on the one stalk has been sent to the Daily Times on behalf of Mrs W. J. Rodger, of Conical Hills, in whose garden the flower was grown. Mrs Rodgers had the flower, sent to Dunv edin because of the interest aroused by a photograph in this paper recently of a similar flower with 62 blooms on the one stalk. All the blooms are supported on a stalk more than - lin wide and about 3-16 in thick. Theatrical Anecdotes A wealth of anecdotes connected with theatrical life and personalities he had met during his 50 years with J. C. Williamson and Co., Ltd., was told to members of the Auckland . Rotary Club this week by ,Mr John Farrell. The company’s present touring manager, Mr Farrell was once on the Stage himself, and played in the “Mikado” in Dunedin in 1893. Mr J. C. Williamson made most of his m’oney, he said, from a play called . “Struck OiL”
Manapouri Hotel The Wallace Licensing Committee has invited applications for- the tourist house licence made available to the Manapouri district, stated the clerk to the Wallace County Council, in his monthly report. No suggestion had been made of trust control for this house,' and consequently the council 'would not require to take any further step's.- The minimum standards set by the commission called for a well-con-dycted tourist house, which should be a distinct advantage to this popular resort
New Settlers' Magazine British settlers in New Zealand have not been slow in producing their own monthly magazine, a copy of which has been’ received by the Daily Times. Published by the New Settlers’ Association, in Wellington, the New Settler is a well-set-up journal containing news, views and special articles from contributors in many parts of the Dominion. Pictures are also reproduced. The > staff is made up of settlers, and correspondents have been arranged to report on immigration affairs in the various centres outside Wellington.
