Racial Separation In Parks In Johannesburg

NZPA—Reuter— -Copyright

Rec. 11 p.m. CAPE TOWN. Oct‘. 18. Johannesburg, South Africa’s biggest city, yesterday approved the principle of racial separation in public parks. The City Council agreed to amend the local by-laws to enable it to prosecute people entering recreation grounds reserved exclusively for people of a different racial group. Johannesburg has a population of 500,000, which is almost equally divided between white and coloured races. The amendment must be approved by the Administrator of the Transvaal Province in which Johannesburg lies. The majority of the councillors who approved the amendment are members of the United Party, formerly led by the late Field-marshal Smuts. Separate public transport is already provided in Johannesburg for Europeans and Africans.
