UNIVERSITY SALARIES

Unattractive Scale In Dominion “ Until the New Zealand salary scales are greatly improved it will be impossible, in the sciences at least, to attract any good people to senior posts in the Dominion,” said Professor V. J. Chapman, professor of botany at Auckland University College, in a report on university staff recruitment received by the Auckland University College Council this week. Professor Chapman was reporting to the council after his return from special leave to attend the International Botanical Congress at Stockholm. He also visited England and the United States. Professor Chapman said that the only persons offering would be of poor calibre who had no hope of securing advancement in England. With the higher salaries obtainable in Australia, it was unlikely that many good candidates would be available from there. There did not seem to be signs of a forthcoming glut of young, highlyqualified people suitable for junior posts. Professor Chapman said that the basic professorial salary in Birmingham was £1650, with £SO for each child; and at Oxford £IBSO, with a similar child allowance.
