TO PLAY FOR KAIKORAI
Otago Cricket Coach
SERVICES IN DEMAND , B. Sutcliffe, the Otago Cricket Association’s coach, will play for the Kaikorai Club this season. This decision was reached at a meeting of the Management Committee of the Otago Cricket Association last night, when all the senior clubs, with the exception of Carisbrook and Grange, applied for his services. After the clubs’ reasons for their applications had been given, a subcommittee was appointed to make the decision. Wickets Ready The convener of the Grounds Committee, Mr C. Welham, reported that 36 wickets would be available this year, compared with 34 last season. Four would be ready for senior games next Saturday, and it was recommended that the season should open on that day. This was agreed to, and it was decided to begin Second and Third Grade matches the following Saturday, when one-day games will be played. Competition points will be awarded and the normal two-day games will be played commencing on November 4. The committee will decide later when the competitions in the remaining grades will begin. Entries for the various grades are:— First. 8; Second, 16 (plus Colts); Third, 13; Fourth, 12 and Fifth, 5. No entry has so far been received from the air foi’ce. Selection Committee Seven names were returned by clubs in reply to the association’s request for nominations for the position of selector. A motion that a sole selector be appointed was defeated, and after a ballot had been taken, Messrs L. D. Smith, S. F. Duncan and A. N. Lawson were appointed. Before the ballot was taken, Mr E. J. Aim moved that Sutcliffe’s name should be deleted from the list on the grounds that it would not be fair to ask him to accept such a position. This was agreed to. The other nominations received were Messrs A. W. Sinclair, A. Ronaldson and D. R. McKay. Disappointing Response Referring to the Colts’ team, Mr Aim said that the response was disappointing. Only 8 of the 15 players chosen had arrived at the first practice and with three defections already it was apparent that clubs would have to nominate other colts so that the coach would have sufficient players from which to make his selection.
“There has been some apprehension among club officials about the number of their players chosen for this team,” the chairman, Mr E. Hayes, said, “ but it is apparently not realised that a player will later] go back to his club greatly improved.” Representative Practice Players chosen for representative practice at Carisbrook at 5.30 p.m. today are:—R. T. Hunt (University), G. H. Mills, R. N. Couper and D. St. John (Old Boys), S. N. McGregor, W. S. Haig and A. Moir (Grange), E. Watson and L. D. Smith ,(Albion-YMCA), L. Watt and T. Flaws (Kaikorai), B. Sutcliffe (Kaikorai). Other players will be invited to practise later. S. N. McGregor has been included in the Otago junior cricket team to play South Otago and West Otago this week-end. A practice will be held at King’s High School tomorrow at 5.15 p.m. Brabin Shield Team It was decided to play the match between the Brabin Shield team and Country Seniors on December 1 and 2. The match against the Southland senior team will be played on December 8 and 9. Saturday’s Draw
