GIFT PICTURE PROVIDES PROBLEM FOR COUNCIL

LONDON. A £2OOO sterling picture has been the subject of the council controversy here for over two years. The picture “ Tripytch in Blue,” measuring 24 feet by 12 feet, depicts 12 nude young men and women, some of them dancing. The gift of a Czechoslovakian artist, Eugen Hersch, it was presented to Wandsworth (London) Council in gratitude for hospitality received in that London borough when he was a refugee from the Nazis. Council members are at variance on the decision of where to hang it. Some members said that it was a work of art and should be hung in the Town Hall or some of the public libraries. Others said that it was far too undignified to be hung in the Town Hall, and certainly not in one of the public libraries where it could be seen by children. No compromise could be reached, so it was agreed for the time being to store the picture in a littleused corridor leading to the members’ refreshment room in the Town Hall. Since then the council has changed from Socialist to Conservative, but still the problem picture hangs in the corridor—covered by a dust sheet.—Reuter.
