SUMMER SPORTS
Season Opens In Fine Weather The weather was good for a large variety of summer sports which were held in Dunedin on Saturday. A total of 17 bowling clubs began the season in preparation for the start of the Dunedin Bowling Centre’s competitions, which will begin on November 4. The last of the eight city cricket clubs to begin the season—the Carisbrook Club —officially opened its season during the afternoon. At the Caledonian Ground, the Otago Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association held its opening sports day and there was a good turnout of athletes.
At Logan Park, the Otago Lawn Tennis Association began its first Senior Mixed Grade Competition successfully. The Union competition' also began on Saturday, and the 10 courts at Memorial Park were busy. The Otago Men’s Croquet Club held its opening day at Logan Park, and at Tahuna Park, speedway riders practised laps for the opening of the season. The North End Rowing Club were on the water and held a number of races in spite of a fairly strong breeze..
The Rugby match arranged between the Dunedin Club and a Timaru team for the Collins Cup was not held.
