TRIBUTE PAID

Late Max Scherek \ CONCERT IN TOWN HALL A concert sponsored by the Otago Society of Registered Music Teachers as a tribute to the late Mr Max Scherek was held in the Town Hall last night. An attentive audience enjoyed a well-balanced programme of classical music and songs by local artists and music teachers. Selections from Handel, Rachmaninoff, Puccini and Armstrong Gibbs were included in the evening's programme. Paying a tribute to the memory of the late Mr Scherek, Professor V. E. Galway said that the name of Scherek had long been associated with music in Dunedin. He said that Max Scherek’s father, Herr Benno Scherek, had played an important part in the early development of music in Dunedin and the position he created was more than filled by his talented son. Professor Galway added that though Mr Max Scherek had given some outstanding performances in many concertos it was as a teacher that he gave his greatest service -to the community. The programme included: “Farewell I give Thee” and “Toccata in F,” by Professor Galway; “The New Jerusalem,” by the Cecilia Choir and “ Che Gelida Manina,” from “La Boheme,” by Robin Gordon. Other contributors to the programme were, Misses Mary Fraser Mary Pratt, Mary Martin and Mrs Clarice Drake, who was alsd the accompanist.
