ENGLISH CRICKET TOUR
First Century To Sheppard MATCH IN WEST AUSTRALIA NZP A—Copyright Rec. 7.4 p.m. PERTH, Oct. 15. The Cambridge University batsman, David Sheppard, scored the first century of the English cricket tour of Australia against Northam and District yesterday. The match was drawn. Sheppard also scored the first run of the tour and hit the first 4. Sheppard, who opened the innings with Simpson, scored his first 50 with l’s and 2's and an occasional 4. Then he opened his shoulders and raced to 100 (10 4’s) in 158 minutes, after which he went to great pains to throw his wicket away. Parkhouse, who followed Simpson, won immediate recognition by hitting two beautiful 4’s to square-leg and long-on. He knows all the strokes, and used them in racing to 50 in 84 minutes. He was 85 when Sheppard reached his century, added a single, then snicked a ball to the keeper. Parkhouse batted for 118 minutes and hit 11 4's. Compton evidently was not in the mood, and went for seven. Mclntyre batted attractively for 31 and Dewes stubbornly for 38 not out. On resumption of play after England’s declaration, Warr bowled K. Doherty for a* duck in the first over. Wright also bowled well in dismissing two early batsmen, and Brown, in his third over, took two wickets with four balls. Scores:— England D.
