POPULAR PLAY
“ Time And The Conways ” DRAMA CLUB PRODUCTION “ Time and the Conways," the third J. B. Priestley play to be presented in Oamaru recently, was well received by a large audience in the Opera House last night. Staged by the Oamaru Drama Club, the play aroused a good deal of interest during the rehearsal period, and the smooth performance last night showed that there was complete understanding between the producer, Mr Rodney Kennedy, and the cast. The presentation was the thirteenth major effort in the history of the club. Portion of the proceeds is to go to the Oamaru RSA Bowling Club building fund. The play opened on a gay note, the occasion being Kay Conway’s twenty-first birthday party. The first act showed the guest of honour endeavouring to bring order to a boisterous company arranging charades. Tire diverse personalities of the seven Conways—Mrs Conway (Otira Sowden), Alan (Gordon Robertson), Madge (Jan Brocklebank), Robin (Andrew Oats), Hazel (Kathleen Todd), Kay (Beth Pickering), and Carol (Yvonne Lawrie) —and the three people associated with them —Joan Helford (Joan Ahern). Ernest Bevers (Bertram Williams), and Gerald Thornton (Dempster Hamilton)— are fully brought out in this act. Several members of the' cast are not new to Oamaru audiences, while those who had not been seen previously in major productions showed promise. “ Time and the Conways ” will be presented again tonight.
