COAL MINES BILL
Minister Replies To Debate PA WELLINGTON. Oct. 11. Urgency was accorded the passing of the Coal Mines Amendment Bill when the debate on the measure was resumed in the House of Representatives tonight. The Minister of Mines, Mr Sullivan, relying to the debate, said the Bill provided for the taking of coal measures as and when they were required, but if they could not be obtained by negotiation there was power for the Government to acquire them by other means. Opposition voices: Nationalisation. Mr Sullivan said that the claims made by the owners for compensation were two and a-half times the amount of the National Debt. The global sum as computed was insufficient to satisfy any of the private owners. The House divided op the committal of the Bill, which was allowed to proceed by 33 votes to 26. The Bill was put through the rest of the committee stages and passed.
