Union Secretary’s Reply To Minister
PA WELLINGTON, Oct. 11. The secretary of the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Dairy Workers’ Union, Mr C. Gough, today denied that statements he had made concerning conditions in dairy factories were in any way exaggerated or misleading. He was replying to a statement by the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Holyoake. “ It is the Minister’s statement which is misleading,” said Mr Gough. “He attempts to stifle' the truth under the cloak of the words ‘ grossly exaggerated and misleading.’ Does the Minister not know that the Health Department and the dairy division of the Agriculture Department are to examine the charges made? Does the Minister not know that his Undersecretary, Mr Smith, has admitted the truth in these ' words: *lt seems as though the Health Department is slipping ’? “We challenge the Minister publicly to prove that our charges are in any way exaggerated or misleading or to say that there is not one dairy factory in the Minister’s own electorate in which one or more of these charges could not be substantiated. Let us have the Royal Commission and the public will soon be able to decide who it is that is misleading, the union or the Minister of Agriculture."
