VISIT TO DUNEDIN

Professor J. 6. Condliffe DISTINGUISHED ECONOMIST Dr J. B. Condliffe, professor of economics at the University of California, Berkeley, who is on sabbatical leave, will visit Dunedin for a few days from October 23. He held the chair of economics at Canterbury University College for six years after returning from the First World War, and established his reputation with the books, “A Short History of New Zealand” and “New Zealand in the Making.” His next appointment was to the position of research secretary to the Institute of Pacific Relations until 1931. From there, after a year as visiting professor of economics at the University of Michigan, he went to Geneva with the Economic Intelligence Service of the League of Nations and issued the World Economic Survey for two years. His next move was to the London School of Economics as professor of commerce until 1939. These years had laid the basis for his book, •“ The Reconstruction of World Trade,” a comprehensive study of the problems of the troubled years following the depression and an examination of plans for their solution. In 1940 he became established in his present position, and during the war period he also acted as associate director and research associate for the Carnegie Endowment for,lnternational Peace and the Institute of International Studies. His latest work, which should shortly be available in Qtago, is a large volume on "The Commerce of Nations.”

Dr Condliffe ha s always kept in touch with New Zealand thought and inquiry and was a contributor to “Liberty and Learning,” the Canterbury College book which did honour to the inspiring influence of Sir James Hight. While in Dunedin, Dr Condliffe will lunch with the Economic Society, and will meet members of the Institute of International Affairs and the University staff. He will also give a public lecture on Wednesday, October 25, on the economic development of backward industrial areas. »
