OBITUARY

Captain Peter B. Clarke Captain Peter B. Clarke, D.S.C., O B E., M.V.0., commander of the New Zealand Shipping Company’s passenger liner Rangitiki, died in London on Monday after an operation, according to cabled advice. Captain Clarke, known as “Nobby” was well known in Dominion shipping circles and his career was closely linked with New Zealand. One of his ships, the Sussex, was well known in Dominion ports, and was one of the first casualties of the war. It was damaged by a magnetic mine in the Thames Estuary in November, 1939, and badly damaged a year later by aircraft to the west of Ireland. For bringing his crippled ship home and thus saving most of her cargo, Captain Clarke was awarded the 0.8. E. Captain Clarke later commanded the Rangitata and after carrying troops to the Middle East took German and Italian prisoners from the Mediterranean to the United States. During the war Captain Clarke was also master of the Rimutaka and was in command when she carried the first Royal H.R.H. the Duke of Gloucester, Prince William and Prince Richard, to Sydney. He received the M.V.O. after this voyage.

The new commander of the Rangitiki will be Captain E. A. Burton, formerly master of the freighter Hertford.
