SHOW SEASON

Beginning This Week ROYAL CENTENNIAL AT CHRISTCHURCH The season of agricultural and pastoral shows in the South Island begins this week with the Ellesmere Association’s show at Leeston on Saturday. Although the series in Otago will not commence until next month—starting at Oamaru four weeks hence—the various associations have their arrangements well in hand and final preparations are going ahead apace. The special feature of the show season in the. South Island this year will be the Canterbury Royal Centennial Show at Christchurch on November 8,9, and 10 next, when many prominent Otago and Southland exhibitors are bound to be represented in competition with Canterbury and North Island entries. The Northern A. and P. Association will open the Canterbury Centennial Show series with its fixture at Rangiora on Saturday week, and early next month the Ashburton association will also present a special centenary year show. Otago and Southland will have a full series of shows again this season and, even if the effects of an exceptionally dry year do debar some stock and produce from the competitive classes, the shows will undoubtedly be as well supported as in the past. The untiring efforts of the officials and supporters of the various A. and P. associations in the province deserve to be rewarded witn an increasing patronage by exhibitors and prospective exhibitors. Not only do A. and P. shows present a highly worthwhile opportunity for competition in livestock and farm produce sections, but they also provide classes for home industries, home baking and produce, from home gardens. These latter classes at Otago shows and also St shows further afield could well be accorded greater support. The interest and benefit derived from such competition need no elaboration.
