MAYORAL ELECTION

St. Kilda Borough ONE CANDIDATE NAMED Official nominations for the local body elections will close on October 27, but up to the present only Mr A. H. Finnie has indicated that he will be a candidate for the St. Kilda Mayoralty at the elections on November 18. Mr Finnie has been a borough councillor for a number of years. The Daily Times was told yesterday by the secretary of the Otago Labour Representation Committee, Mr J. A. Stead, that there would be no official Labour candidate for the Mayoralty. The present Mayor of St. Kilda, Mr W. Rutherford, when approached yesterday, said that he would make a statement on his intentions about the St. Kilda Mayoralty in a few days. Ten councillors are required for the St. Kilda Borough. At present, only nine are in office owing to the death of Cr J. H. Hinton a short time ago. The Labour Representation Committee has nominated five candidates for the 10 seats. These are Cr R. Braithwaite, who has been a member of the council for a number of years, and Messrs F. Grocott. T. Halliday, P. Cull and P. A. Traill. It was stated that the sitting councillors apart from Cr Braithwaite who will be seeking re-election this year are Crs R. S. Brent, N. H. Shepherd, B. C. Adam and T. B. D. Roy. Those not seeking office again this year are understood to be Crs J .D. Simpson, A. G. McKenzie and P. J. Rendel.

It is improbable that only nine councillor candidates—five Labour and four sitting officers —will go alone to the poll, however, as a non-party organisation in St. Kilda Borough intends to nominate candidates for the council. This body is to meet shortly to appoint its candidates, and it is likely that at least six will be selected apart from those already mentioned. The Labour Party has nominated Mr Traill as a candidate for the Otago Harbour Board for the St. Kilda district, and Mr Cull as a candidate for St. Kilda for the Otago Hospital Board. No other nominations have yet been made for the borough‘for these local bodies.
