WORK AT TRENTHAM

Akbar’s Good Mile Trial RENOWNED IMPRESSIVE Special to the Daily Times « » WELLINGTON, Oct. 10. The northern visitor, Akbar, who is engaged in the Wellington Handicap on Saturday, was responsible for the best mile trial at Trentham this morning in preparation for the opening day of the Wellington Racing Club’s spring meeting. Renowned also impressed over the distance. Perception, Sierra and Professor pleased in the sprints. The galloping took place on the plough and the trial grass, the going being fast. Two-year-olds had the use of the course proper, but the few who were galloped could not be timed. On the plough, Akbar finished better than Clyde Bridge at the end of a mile in lmin 43 2-ssec, the last half being run In 51 2-ssec. Both were under a hold at the end. Akbar, who is in splendid condition, won the Coronation Handicap from a good field at Avondale on September 9, his last start. He has raced well at Trentham previously. Renowned was responsible for a sound effort when she finished half a length in front of Distinction at the end of a mile in lmin 44sec, the last seven furlongs in lmin 31sec and the final four in 52 4-ssec. Renowned looks improved with her race at Masterton on Saturday. Although the opposition is stronger this week, she may be capable of an improved effort. Distinction moved scratchily and would appreciate an easing of the tracks. Perception was doing better than Pride of Belmont after running six furlongs in lmin 17sec, the last four taking 51 4-ssec. Perception has done will since racing at the Otaki meeting and is not without prospects in the October Hack Handicap on Saturday. . , „ ~ The Rip was a length in front of Full of Fun after running seven furlongs in lmin 31sec. Full of Fun has thrived since she won on the second day of the Otaki meeting, and should be capable of another prominent showing in the Glen Hurdles. Bonnie Charlie did not have to do his best to record 51sec for half a mile. Bonnie Charlie appeals as one of the best of the light-weights in the Shorts Handicap, the second leg of the double. He will contest the Wellington Guineas on the second day. Bonnie King and Rising Tide were on terms after running six furlongs, the last four in 51sec and the final three In 37sec. Bonnie King has done well since he was beaten narrowly into third on the second day at Otaki. On the trial grass, the stablemates Sierra and Gay Revel pleased by the manner in which they left six furlongs behind in lmin 16' 4-ssec. Sierra finished the better and ran the last four in 50sec. The Bat gave an excellent display over four schooling hurdles in the centre of the course. The Bat has raced well in his latest starts in the Auckland district and may be one of the favourites in the Glen Hurdles.
