COMMISSION OF INQUIRY
PA WELLINGTON, Oct. 10. The announcement that a Commission of Inquiry would investigate all aspects of war pensions was made by the Minister of Defence, Mr Macdonald, during discussion of the vote for war and other pensions in the House of Representatives tonight. He said the commission would consist of a magistrate and one representative each of returned servicemen from the First and Second World Wars. He hoped to be able to announce the personnel in a few days’ time. Such a commission had been asked for by the RSA. Mr Macdonald made this announcement when replying to his predecessor in office, Mr F. Jones, who claimed that the present Government was trying to forget that there were returned servicemen in New Zealand and that its interest in them was flagging. Mr Jones said it was not to the Government’s credit that while the cost of living had soared pensioners had at best received an increase of only 2s 6d a week. The RSA, which was pressing for more liberal increases, had never had a stronger case, said Mr Jones.
Mr Macdonald replied that returned servicemen were better represented in the House on the Government side than by the Opposition and would not be allowed to suffer.
