NEW BOXING TITLE

Light Heavy-weight Won By Russ Broughton PA MASTERTON, Oct. 8. Russ Broughton (Masterton), 12st 6slb, last night became the light heavyweight professional boxing champion of New Zealand when he beat Tommy Downes (Masterton), 12st 511 bon points in a largely attended open-air bout at Solway Showgrounds, Masterton. The fight went the full 15 rounds. The first four rounds were very quiet, but after that both boxers mixed it freely. Broughton attacked with both hands, but Downes was quicker on his feet, and had the better of the infighting. In the sixth round, Downes was down for a count of nine. Broughton had the initiative for most of the remaining rounds, but Downes’s coolness and clever footwork frustrated the attacks.
