NEED FOR UMPIRES

Appeal To Cricketers A suggestion that should do much to improve the standard of umpiring in junior cricket was made at the official opening of the University Club at the University Oval on Saturday. The president, Mr A. W. Sinclair, and the Umpires’ Association representative, Mr S. Tomkinson, referred to a proposal that had emanated from the former test match umpire, Mr W. Butler, that with a view to raising the standard of umpiring in the lower grades, senior cricketers who were not in the field could operate a relay service of umpiring on adjacent grounds. Both speakers mentioned that the Umpires’ Association could call upon only 12 umpires, which meant that most junior games had to be umpired by junior players themselves. It has been decided to bring the matter before the notice of all the senior clubs.
