TWO FOURSOME TITLES

f Silk And Collins Begin Wen | In Golf Championships

Staff Reporter

CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 8. S Returning a 36-hole score of 145—one stroke under scratch—B. M. n Silk and J. F. Collins, both of Wanganui, retained the New Zealand

Amateur Foursomes Championship at Shirley yesterday on the first day 'n of the National Golf Championship meeting. Silk and Collins also won > the newly-created Open Foursomes Championship, beating the profes- :• sionals N. H. Fuller (Waitikiri) and J. K. Waite (Auckland) by one | itroke. Fuller and Waite won the Professional Title for the second year in succession.

The form of the players competing ' in the Foursomes yesterday was ‘s watched with interest by big galleries of spectators, but the serious > business will start tomorrow with , < the first round of the Open champion■i' ship. A hot favourite for this coveted title, Peter Thomson, the young VicJ>'torian professional, did not play yestn. - erday in the Foursomes. Conditions yesterday were almost o perfect, and the big crowd of spectas tors, which gathered at the Pagoda, > a point on the links which commands a view of about five holes, sweltered

has returned to the New Zealand championship scene after his visit to Britain, and Hattersley and R. H. Glading. Scores:—

in the hot sunshine. Calm conditions ... were experienced until mid-afternoon, S when a brisk north-easter wind sprang up. As indicated in the players’ corn's ments after the practice rounds, the course was not easy, and many valuable strokes were dropped by drives i and irons straying into the wiry 1?: rough that tightly guards the fairways. H The best performances of Otago and (f Southland players were those of O. ss, Ford (St. Clair), partnered by a h former clubmate, R. D. Wilson, of Z Gore, who finished fifth in the amateur field with 152, and T. W. Wight (Otago) and A. C. Sherriff (Chisholm Park),

who finished fifth among the professionals.

C" Ford and Wilson were well in the S' running after the morning round when they returned an excellent 74, but things did not go quite so smoothly 1 in the afternoon, and the result was

v a 78. Nevertheless, this was a fine S performance in a high-class field, and Son an exacting course. Wight and Sherriff scored a solid 75 in the momXi ing round. They were a bit shaky Z? on the first nine holes, but on the homeward journey, Sherriff found inspiration with his putter, and the pair carded a brilliant 34—three under .*■ par. They tried hard in the after- >' noon, but a 78 was hardly good ~ enough. Wight is hitting his shots > well, and those who remember the form of his amateur days will hope S that he turns it on for the three days of the Open. The Russley amateur. D. C. Watson. N and A. R. Timms, the St. Clair scratch •J- player, covered the morning round in si' 74 strokes, which put them well at S the top of the ladder. They lost £ touch in the afternoon, however, and v returned a disastrous 84. An Otago Club pair who did well at Hastings s- last year, -J. A. Scouler. and A. H. "•>; Boyd fought every inch of the way S for rounds of 77 and 78. A. Gibbs v and N. H. North, both of Otago, had X rounds of 78 and 77 for 155, while £ another Otago pair, F. W. Dixon and C J. N. Lemon, could not better two 78’s. S' After an 82 in the morning, B. V. Wright and T. C. Tyrrell, Doth of X the Otago Club, apparently decided X that things had gone far enough, and si they finished the afternoon round with x a 75. T. B. Ferguson (Otago) and >S. R. Cuthbertson, the North Otago . < Club champion had rounds of 79 and S 80.

• The biggest gallery of the day followed the professionals A. J. Shaw (Miramar) and R. H. Glading (Shirley), who were playing with the amateurs, J. Holden (New Plymouth) and A. R. Kitto (Castlecliffe). Holden, ’ the reigning Amateur Singles chamfiion, with D. V. Sutherland, was a oint holder of the Amateur Foursomes title last year with Silk and Collins. * Shaw and Glading began the day well with a 72 in the morning, but faded away in the afternoon with a 77 to finish three strokes behind Waite and Fuller in second place. Holden and Kitto, with a total of 150, finished third among the amateurs. The best afternoon’s golf was played by Silk and Collins, who were partnered with the professionals, James Galloway (Whangarei), the present Open champion, and T. S. Galloway (Rotorua).

Both pairs played a superior brand of golf to return 72. Consistent golf was played by the Waitikiri players, D. L. Woon and J. W. Jackson, who finished second in the Amateur Foursomes, four strokes behind Silk and Collins. Woon’s recent performances have aroused a good deal of speculation about his prospects in the Open, and he is regarded as the amateur with one of the best chances of staying with Thomson and the other top professionals. The Australian amateurs, H. W. Hattersley and B. Fitzpatrick, were riot in the hunt yesterday, and carded 78 and 80. The play of the English professional, E. A. Southerden (attached to Napier), was watched with a good deal of interest. Partnered with the Maraenui professional, A. H. Dyke, Southerden scored 153, 75 in the morning and 78 in the afternoon. Southerden, who has had experience of big golf overseas, is a powerful hitter, and his reputation has lent colour to the championship field. A high north-west wind was blowing in Christchurch today, and conditions tomorrow for the first round of the Open may not be as pleasant as they were yesterday. The pairs which will probably attract the galleries will be Thomson and W. H. 'Horne (Wellington), a former amateur champion, Silk and Shaw, Kitto and A. Murray, the unattached Auckland professional, who
